Changing the conversation in our health system to empower consumers to choose wisely - Join us at the Choosing Wisely Australia National Meeting

With the theme Empowering consumers to choose wisely, the upcoming 2021 Choosing Wisely Australia National Meeting will offer a platform for Choosing Wisely members and supporters, consumer advocates, health services and other healthcare influencers to engage and be champions in our health system so that people only receive care that is evidence-based and truly needed.

Registrations are closing on 14 May for this fully virtual event which will take place on Wednesday 19 May 2021.

NPS MedicineWise CEO Adj A/Prof Steve Morris says he encourages people working in hospitals, general practice and other health services as well as policy makers and consumer advocates with a stake in consumers choosing their healthcare wisely to join us online for the meeting.

“We often talk about consumer-centred health care, but putting this into practice isn’t always easy,” said Mr Morris.

“The Choosing Wisely Australia National Meeting will not only provide us with a global perspective on international efforts to reduce unnecessary care but a showcase of local initiatives and solutions to build patient-centred skills in our healthcare professionals, really embed shared decision-making, and integrate Choosing Wisely principles into our health system now and into the future,” he said.

The 2021 Choosing Wisely Australia National Meeting program includes:

  • Keynote and plenary presentations from
    • Tara Montgomery – public health advocate and communications strategist. Global perspective on the importance of trust as a factor in the success of international efforts to reduce unnecessary care
  • Professor Alex Broom – Professor of Sociology at the University of Sydney. Systems and organisational challenges
  • Professor Jeffery Braithwaite – Founding Director of the Australian Institute of Health Innovation. What are the future trends in healthcare and what does it mean for empowering consumers?
  • Panel discussions and lightning talks
  • Networking opportunities.

The National Medicines Symposium 2021 directly precedes the Choosing Wisely National Meeting on Tuesday 18 May 2021 with the theme Evaluating quality use of medicines: How do we know if we’re making a difference?

Registrations for both NMS 2021 and the 2021 Choosing Wisely Australia National Meeting close on 14 May 2021 and cost $100 for each event.
