Choosing Wisely Australia is an initiative currently being developed by NPS MedicineWise, in collaboration with other key stakeholders (including medical specialist colleges such as ACEM).
Choosing Wisely commenced as an initiative of the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Foundation, and other countries have recently adopted local versions, following the success of the US. It encourages clinicians, consumers and health care stakeholders to think about and discuss medical tests and procedures that may be overused, unnecessary or harmful.
ACEM is currently involved in Choosing Wisely Australia through the Representatives Panel, comprising all participating colleges and professional societies, consumer groups and other key stakeholders. Each participating organisation will be developing a list of recommendations - "Five things consumers and clinicians should question".
ACEM has convened a Working Group to oversee the development of its 5 recommendations.
A member consultation has also been undertaken, and this feedback is currently being considered by the Working Group.
