National Meeting showcases progress of Choosing Wisely

The inaugural Choosing Wisely Australia National Meeting, hosted by NPS MedicineWise on 4 May, showcased the great progress the initiative has made during its first two years.

More than 200 delegates participated in the event, with the results of many Choosing Wisely initiatives being shared for the first time. Topics included:

  • the imperative for culture change in Australia’s health service delivery
  • implementation strategies by Australian health services, health professional organisations and
    NPS MedicineWise
  • strategies for consumer engagement, and
  • early results from evaluation activities.
The event was also an opportunity to gather important feedback on the key challenges and opportunities facing the initiative moving forward.  Read more here.

New Champion Health Services

Choosing Wisely Australia is pleased to welcome the Women's and Children's Health Network, South Metropolitan Health Service, and WA Country Health Service (Wheatbelt) as our newest Champion Health Services. We look forward to working closely with them on new Choosing Wisely initiatives.

The biases that impact care

The Medical Journal of Australia has published a paper exploring ingrained cognitive biases, and their effect on initiatives such as Choosing Wisely and EVOLVE. Countering cognitive biases in minimising low value care was authored by Ian Scott of Princess Alexandra Hospital and the University of Queensland, Jason Soon of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, Adam Elshaug of the Menzies Centre for Health Policy, and Robyn Lindner of NPS MedicineWise.

Insights: Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital

We are pleased to present an article from the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH) on initiatives they are implementing in the hospital as a Choosing Wisely Australia Champion Health Service. The article summarises the key strategies being undertaken by RBWH to reduce low value healthcare.
