On behalf of NPS MedicineWise, Choosing Wisely Australia invites you to our 2020 National Meeting to be held at the International Convention Centre Sydney on Wednesday 20 May.

This year’s National Meeting offers a platform for Choosing Wisely members and supporters, consumer advocates, health services and other healthcare influencers to engage in discussions, presentations and workshops about empowering consumers and supporting health professionals to be champions for changing the conversations in our health system so that people only receive care that is evidence-based and truly needed.

The National Meeting will be immediately followed by the National Medicines Symposium (NMS) 2020 on Thursday 21 May, with the theme Rising to the medication safety challenge.

A networking event for all delegates of both events will be held on the afternoon of Wednesday 20 May.

Call for Abstracts​

We invite abstract submissions that highlight advances and learnings in supporting a national conversation about unnecessary healthcare.

Within the theme Empowering consumers to choose wisely, abstract submissions may be accepted as poster displays or lightning talks based on the following streams:
  • Building consumer confidence in shared decision making
  • Health professionals leading by example
  • Impact of ‘the conversation’
  • Changing culture in organisations and systems
We particularly welcome presentations from consumers, carers and/or support workers, as well as co-presentations with both a healthcare provider as well as a consumer, carer and/or support worker.

Abstracts should be a maximum of 300 words.

Peer review of Abstracts

All abstract submissions will be peer-reviewed for inclusion in the program and successful authors will be required to register for the event to guarantee their time slot. 

Closing date for submissions

The closing date for abstract submission is Wednesday 26 February 2020. Submission of abstracts will not be accepted after this date.
Authors will be notified of the success of their submission on Monday 23 March.

Registration for the 2020 Choosing Wisely Australia National Meeting is now open. We welcome all delegates and look forward to seeing you at the International Convention Centre, Sydney on Wednesday 20 May.

The National Meeting is immediately followed by the National Medicines Symposium (NMS) 2020.
There are different types of registration, so please read all the information on this page before registering.

  • Both the 2020 Choosing Wisely Australia National Meeting and the National Medicines Symposium (NMS) 2020 

During the National Meeting  we will have a registration desk on level 2 of the International Convention Centre, Sydney. Assistance will be available:

  • Wednesday, 20 May 2020 from 07.30-17.30

How to register

Register online. Discounted tickets are available for those who would like to attend both the 2020 National Meeting and NMS 2020.

Individual registration

Please create a new user account. It is important that you record your sign in details for later use. This will allow you to access your registration record to update your contact details, to make changes or to pay by credit card.

If you have submitted an abstract, you have already created an account – please sign in with your existing account email address and password.

By registering online, you will receive an immediate confirmation via email, including a tax invoice.

What's included

Registration for the 2020 Choosing Wisely Australia National Meeting includes the following:
  • attendance at the symposium on Wednesday 20 May
  • a copy of the program
  • access to the national meeting proceedings
  • morning tea, lunch, and afternoon tea
  • attendance at the welcome reception function to be held in the afternoon on Wednesday 20 May

All prices are in Australian dollars and include 10% Australian Goods and Services Tax (GST).

We are unable to accept payment by direct debit.

A paid tax invoice will be automatically emailed to the address supplied upon submission of your registration

Changes to your registration

You can sign into your registration record using your account email address and password if you need to make changes to your registration. Alternatively, you can request a change in writing by emailing the symposium secretariat at cwa@expertevents.com.au.

Cancellations and refund policy

Cancellations must be advised in writing to the 2020 National Meeting secretariat.
Registration cancellations received by Friday, 17 April 2020 will receive a refund of registration fees, less an administrative charge of $50.

Refunds for cancellations received after Friday, 17 April 2020 will be at the discretion of NPS MedicineWise

Transfer of registration

Registrations are transferable to a colleague at any time prior to the event, provided the 2020 National Meeting secretariat is advised in writing.


Booking accommodation with your registration

Accommodation has been reserved on behalf of Choosing Wisely 2020 delegates at Sofitel Darling Harbour, Novotel Sydney Darling Harbour and Hotel Ibis Darling Harbour until Monday, 20 April 2020. Accommodation will be allocated in order of receipt of bookings and is subject to availability. To secure the conference accommodation rates, bookings should be made online as part of the registration process. Please note that accommodation costs are additional to your registration fees. See the table below for room rates.

Arrival time

Please indicate your estimated time of hotel arrival on your registration form. If you wish to guarantee your room is ready before the hotel check-in time, it’s recommended that you book the room for the evening prior to your arrival. If arriving after 1800, failure to advise your arrival time may mean that your room will be released.
Changes to your accommodation booking
Please notify your requests for changes and cancellations in writing to the Choosing Wisely secretariat via cwa@expertevents.com.au.

All cancellations must be advised by email to the conference secretariat. Please be aware that each hotel has a specific cancellation policy and this is listed below in the information about each hotel.
Extending your stay
If you wish to extend your stay prior to or following Choosing Wisely 2020, please specify your requirements in the additional nights field during the accommodation booking process. Availability and rates will be checked with the hotel before your reservation is fully confirmed.
Payment for accommodation
Please note that payment of accommodation is not taken at the time of completing an online conference registration, however a credit card is required at the time of booking to guarantee your room with the hotel. Accommodation providers have varying deposit and guarantee requirements (please refer to each hotel’s payment and cancellation policies below).
If you wish the hotel to settle your account with a credit card of which you are not the signatory, you must provide written authority to the hotel to do so. A third party credit card form will be emailed to the guest approximately 30 days prior to check in. This form should be completed and returned directly to the hotel. A deposit equivalent to one night will be charged to the credit card 30 days prior to arrival. (If you are only staying for one night this would be full payment 30 days prior)
